Kolkata: A couple along with their fourteen year old daughter were allegedly assaulted and manhandled by a gang of bikers near Barnaparichay market at College Street area in Central Kolkata on Sunday night. The gang even assaulted and snatched a golden bracelet of one of their relatives when he rushed to their rescue allegedly by threatening him at gunpoint. The patrolling police from the Jorasanko police station rescued them and managed to arrest three of the accused.
According to police sources, Debasish Pal Chowdhury along with his wife Rupa and fourteen year old daughter had come to their relative’s house at Madan Mohan Lane under Muchipara police station area on Sunday. Pal Chowdhury, a former footballer with the East Bengal club had come to see his hospitalized mother- in law at Medical College Hospital, a stones throw away from his relative’s house. The couple had their dinner and at around 11.30 at night they made their way to their residence at Baranagar in the northern fringes of the city.
Near Hedua crossing under Burtolla police station area two bikers hit their car from behind. They picked up a quarrel with the couple and allegedly assaulted Pal Chowdhury. The patrolling police luckily intervened and the bikers had to pay Rs 2000 to Pal Chowdhury as compensation for causing damage to the vehicle.
Meanwhile, Pal Chowdhury called his relative Krishnendu who rushed to the spot and told him to stay back at their Muchipara residence as it was almost 1 am at night. The couple started their return journey but was stopped by a gang of eight bikers (three in each motorbike). They started abusing them in filthiest language and even tried to manhandle his wife Rupa. “I was kicked and punched. Even Krishnendu who was accompanying us was assaulted. They brandished firearms and snatched his golden bracelet,” said Pal Chawdhury.
“Such sequences I have often seen in Bollywood films. But I had never dreamt that I myself would be subjected to such things,” said an alarmed Rupa.
Krishnendu somehow managed to call one of his known official at Jorasanko police station and a patrolling team rushed to their rescue. The miscreants tried to flee away but one of the bikes with three persons skidded in the tram tracks and they fell down. The police caught them right from the spot.
“The Jorasanko police station has arrested Mohammad Nasim, Mohammad Ali Akbar and Mohammad Ishaque, all residents of Chatubabu Lane in Entally. They have been slapped charges of snatching, assault and Arms Act. Search is on to nab the other accused,” said D.P. Singh, deputy commissioner of police (Central).
The three accused were produced at the Bankshal court on Monday and were remanded to police custody till May 4th.
