UPA announced Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee as its candidate for President of India's election.
New Delhi: The Congress-led UPA has announced Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s name as its candidate for the post of President of India.
Amidst all the oppositions the Congress went ahead with its decision of making 77-year-old Mukherjee as President while ignoring the objection of Congress chief Mamata Banerjee. The Congress decision has been endorsed swiftly by supporting parties SP and BSP.
After the declaration of Mukherjee’s nomination by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi after a UPA meeting in the afternoon, the SP and BSP announced their support, taking the UPA’s strength in the Electoral College to 49 per cent, excluding the TMC vote share.
The UPA government now has to look for his replacements as Finance Minister and Leader of the Lok Sabha.
